Preparation for weight-loss surgery

No one makes this decision lightly

Weight loss surgery, known as bariatric surgery, is designed to make surgical changes to a person’s stomach and digestive system that limits how much food a person can eat, leading to long-term weight loss. These surgeries are typically not reversible, therefore it is essential that each person prepares physically and psychologically for a lifelong decision. Some people lose control of their weight due to a Binge Eating Disorder, whilst for other people it is related to education, lifestyle or health-related factors. DSM Psychology has a keen interest in this area to ensure each person is psychologically prepared for this life-altering procedure.

There are several options available to assist with preparation for weight loss surgery. These include:

  • Assessment: This will be the first step for most people. This involves completing a number of mental health questionnaires that measure your current indicators of depression, anxiety, binge eating and food addiction. This is followed by an interview to discuss your reasons for surgery, eating and coping behaviours, and to provide feedback and recommendations related to your current mental health. You will receive a written summary of the key findings, concerns raised and recommendations.

  • Pre-surgery preparation: Following the assessment, some people will choose to attend a number of follow-up sessions to address the mental health or coping-related issues identified in the assessment. These sessions are targeted towards key issues that will benefit from time-limited interventions in the lead up to surgery. Whilst long-term issues may be identified, they are unlikely to be resolved by a limited number of sessions. GP referrals under a Mental Health Treatment Plan are encouraged.

  • Post-surgery consolidation: Weight-loss surgery is better thought of as a journey rather than a destination. It is common to need support following surgery to address emotional and psychological issues that arise, or old habits that return.
