Health-related concerns

Health can be very stressful or get you down

When people experience short-term, and long-term health issues, it common for people to experience difficulties coping with the challenges of this. This can take the form of feeling down and depressed about what is happening to them, or can show itself in an anxiety about their health and their future. People can also experience a psychological injury whilst receiving medical treatment, such as things going wrong or scary experiences that can’t easily be shaken off.

DSM Psychology has a particular interest in offering short-term, evidence-based therapies for health-related concerns. These therapies are designed to identify your goals, to look at your thinking, behaviours and bad experiences that are preventing you from moving forward, and set a treatment plan to get you back on track. Sometimes this also involves working through permanent changes due to your health, and developing coping skills to lives with these changes in the long-term.

Some chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer make you more likely to develop a mental health condition. A great overview of how these conditions can lead to developing depression can be found following this link.
